Karma and bounties

How to increase your karma

A crucial feature of the DAE learning game is that of karma. Every stakeholder has a varying amount of karma during the learning process that is used for governance, self and peer assessment, and remuneration.

Karma can increase through virtuous actions, also known as bounties. A virtuous action is a behavior that augment the homogeneous level of knowledge of the classroom.

Bounties are either bound or free variables in the scaffolding of the course. This means that some actions are fixed in advance by the teacher, and other can be proposed and voted by the community.

For the Dear Data course, the first IRL iteration of the DAE model, the karma rules follow:

  1. initially, all students has karma 10 and the teacher has karma 50 (we expect at least 10 students hence the teacher's karma is initially half of the cumulative student's karma)

  2. however, while teacher's karma is immutable, students can increase their karma by completing bounties, that is taking virtuous behaviour that increase the general knowledge of the class

  3. a student reaching a given karma level receives a commemorative badge (designed by pixellare), which is a soulbound credential:

    1. the first badge is called Red Panda and corresponds to karma 20

    2. the second badge is called White Tiger and corresponds to karma 30

    3. the third and last badge is called Black Dragon and corresponds to karma 40

    4. notice that teachers are Black Dragons from the beginning

So, what is a virtuous action, concretely? And how worth is it in terms of karma? Here are some examples:

  1. Answer a non-trivial question made by the teacher or by a peer student. Questions are posed live during the teaching or on the Discord channel of the course [karma +1/+2]

  2. Discover a significant bug in the DAE lab or DAE app [karma +5]

  3. Make a significant proposal that passed the temperature check on Discord [karma +5]

  4. Learn a topic and make a brief presentation (max 45 minutes) to the class [karma from +8 to +12 depending on the karma-weighted votes of teachers and peer students]

  5. Present a generative art project at fxhash [karma +8] or at Art Blocks [karma +12] to all members of the working group

Additional bounties can be proposed by the students and voted by the community.
