Generative Art

Theory and practice of generative art

Generative art refers to art that in whole or in part has been created with the use of an autonomous system. An autonomous system in this context is a system that is non-human and can independently determine features of a design that would otherwise require decisions made directly by the artist (typically a machine).

It is worth noticing that a generative piece of art is a collaboration between artist and machine. While the brush for the painter or the chisel for the sculptor are only tools that cannot act autonomously, the machine effectively takes part in the generation of a generative artwork.

Crypto art encompasses art forms that make use of the blockchain technology (in particular NFTs) not only as a medium for the dissemination of artistic work but also as a reference for artistic creation.

Martin Lukas Ostachowski maintains a chronological review of crypto art, blockchain-related physical art and crypto collectibles.

This is a not-so-short journey into the art of making art with code. In particular, we will focus on the intersection of generative art and crypto art.
