Little Decalogue for Crypto Artists

The formula of success?

  1. Create out of necessity. Create only when you feel the need to express something inescapable for you, don't do it to follow the market.

  2. Create sparingly. Don't flood the market with your works; no one is asking you to. Dose your creations over time. When you are at the peak of success, stop for a while. Resume vigorously when you've hit the bottom.

  3. Sell patiently. Every work has its collector, but perhaps they have yet to be born. Do not rush to sell your works; if, when you created them, you were happy with them, there is no reason to change your mind later. Remember that the art world, and particularly crypto art, is a chaotic system. Success may come when you least expect it, for reasons unknown to you, and then suddenly cease with no apparent explanation. Try to navigate, or at least stay afloat, in this unpredictable sea.

  4. Build and maintain your position in the network. Artistic talent is a necessary but not sufficient condition in the art world. You must be able to build a community on social media and cultivate daily relationships with fellow artists, curators, gallery owners, and collectors. Performance determines success, but when performance is not objectively measurable - as in art - it is the network that defines success.

  5. Improve your performance steadily. While it is true that talent is innate, performance, that is, the result of putting talent to work, is improvable over time. Do it daily. A small improvement every day means a huge compose increase in the long term.

  6. Collaborate, don't compete. You will never be the best and you will never have all the skills. So do collaborate, do not compete, with artist far away from your cup of tea. This will give you access to new worlds and, although it will temporarily take you away from your own style, it will be very instructive and rewarding.

  7. Balance the conventional with the innovative. It is well known that art is an unstable balance between order and disorder. Set a conventional ground, it will give you structure. Then introduce doses of chaos on this orderly foundation. Not too much, otherwise your works will become incomprehensible. Beauty is the place where the eye rests, feeling safe.

  8. Become multifaceted. Study art and its history. Delve into blockchain technology in its essential components. Learn the fundamentals of cryptocurrencies and decentralize finance. Acquire the basics of social media marketing.

  9. Persevere; if you are talented, success will come. Since the art market is a chaotic system, there is a risk of getting depressed when things are not going well, or getting excited when they are going too well. In either case you are losing grounding. If the conditions described in the above points are verified, it is only a matter of time. Quality always pays off sooner or later.

  10. If you have no talent for what you do, change. There is also the possibility that this is not your path. If that is the case, don't clutch at it; have the courage to change. Listen to yourself and look for your talent elsewhere.

Last piece of advice: use your earnings to buy the most important thing: time!

Play - Create your own NFT project

At this point, you should have all knowledge and skills to become a generative and crypto artist - if you wish. Here is a suggestion for an incremental path towards this goal.

My strong advice is to work in a multi-disciplinary group containing differently skilled subjects. In particular, you need artistic talent, programming skills as well as digital marketing abilities.

Let's start:

  1. Buy an NFT on Tezos blockchain. It is United Colors of NFTs and costs 0.1 XTZ

  2. Mint an NFT on Tezos. Create an original artwork and tokenize it, for instance, on the objkt marketplace on Tezos blockchain. You do not need any whitelisting and it will cost a fraction of XTZ

  3. Deploy your own contract with Manifold and mint on it your NFTs. You can mint single, limited and open editions of your art. Airdrop some of your tokens to your best friends or ask them to claim the tokens

  4. Mint a generative project on fxhash. Go ahead and present your generative project to a bigger audience. You need to be skillful in p5.js programming. You also need some XTZ in your kukai wallet

  5. Mint a generative project on Art Blocks. Go for the top! Besides artistic talent, skills in p5.js programming and digital marketing, you need a strong long-form generative art project, with high quality and large variance outcomes. You also need some ETH on your Metamask wallet
